Virgin and martyr. The earliest historical account of the veneration of St. Dymphna dates from the middle of the thirteenth century. Under Bishop Guy I of Cambrai (1238-47), Pierre, a canon of the church. of Saint Aubert at Cambrai, wrote a "Vita" of the saint, from which we learn that she had been venerated for many years in a church at Gheel (province of Antwerp, Belgium), which was devoted to her. The author expressly states that he has drawn his biography from oral tradition. According to the narrative Dymphna, the daughter of a pagan king of Ireland, became a Christian and was secretly baptized. After the death of her mother, who was of extraordinary beauty, her father desired to marry his own daughter, who was just as beautiful, but she fled with the priest Gerebernus and landed at Antwerp. Thence they went to the village of Gheel, where there was a chapel of St. Martin, beside which they took up their abode. The messengers of her father however, discovered their whereabouts; the father betook himself thither and renewed his offer. Seeing that all was in vain, he commanded his servants to slay the priest, while he himself struck off the head of his daughter. The corpses were put in sarcophagi and entombed in a cave where they were found later.

The body of St. Dymphna was buried in the church of Gheel, and the bones of St. Gerebernus were transferred to Xanten. This narrative is without any historical foundation, being merely a variation of the story of the king who wanted to marry his own daughter, a motif which appears frequently in popular legends. Hence we can conclude nothing from it as to the history of St. Dymphna and the time in which she lived. That she is identical with St. Damhnat of Ireland cannot be proved. There are at Gheel fragments of two simple ancient sarcophagi in which tradition says the bodies of Dymphna and Gerebernus were found. There is also a quadrangular brick, said to have been found in one of the sarcophagi, bearing two lines of letters read as DYMPNA. The discovery of this sarcophagus with the corpse and the brick was perhaps the origin of the veneration. In Christian art St. Dymphna is depicted with a sword in her hand and a fettered devil at her feet. Her feast is celebrated 15 May, under which date she is also found in the Roman martyrology.
From time immemorial, the saint was invoked as patroness against insanity. The Bollandists have published numerous accounts of miraculous cures, especially between 1604 and 1668. As a result, there has long been a colony for lunatics at Gheel; even now there are sometimes as many as fifteen hundred whose relatives invoke St. Dymphna for their cure. The insane are treated in a peculiar manner; it is only in the beginning that they are placed in an institution for observation; later they are given shelter in the homes of the inhabitants, take part in their agricultural labors, and are treated very kindly. They are watched without being conscious of it. The treatment produces good results. The old church of St. Dymphna in Gheel was destroyed by fire in 1489. The new church was consecrated in 1532 and is still standing. Every year on the feast of the saint and on the Tuesday after Pentecost numerous pilgrims visit her shrine. In Gheel there is also a fraternity under her name.

I hope that we (USA) can make it through another holiday season without some terrible disaster of some kind. The other night I saw a little bit of a South Park episode, that had Santa fighting the Iraqis and even though he was really mad, because they had just shot and killed his friend Jesus, Santa decided that he had enough killing, so once airborne with his sleigh he loaded a special kind of missile. That when fired, they didn't cause any more death or destruction but rather turned the guns missiles into candy canes and presents, which made the Iraqis very happy. It is too bad that will never happen, even though that story makes about as much sense as any other stupid thing that happens over there. Have a safe happy Christmas, Joseph W.

Tonight I drove to Orleans, the next town up the Cape, so that I could pick up something to eat (spicy chicken sandwich). When I tried to get the local paper , I noticed the paper machine was empty, as I leaned down to look in to see if the other paper machine had any. I got that weird deja vu feeling. The day before at the same spot as I first got the paper and usually look at the main stories, an urge came over me to look at the obituary section. Well I did but saw nothing significant so didn't think much of it. That takes us to tonight, when I opened the first page, there was a story about my friend. He name was Conrad Nobili and this article told of a internationally known architect , who graduated Harvard & Harvard School of Design in 1957, etc.. What it didn't tell that he was not the average 70 year old man, he was in better shape then most 20 year olds and was so full of life, his spirit appeared to "glow", one of those new age people would say something about his "aura". Well, I do not know about auras but I have met lots of people and know when one is special, he was. We met one morning at a place called Nauset marsh in Eastham, MA on Cape Cod. Said hello & instead of going our separate ways, like we all do when we meet a friendly person somewhere. Something told me to invite him on the walk around the marsh that morning, plus our two dogs seemed to hit it off. Over the past summer we ran into each other many times, he seemed pleased with my interest in Nauset marsh & its colorful history of settelers, natives & pirates (his dog was named after Captain Black Sam Bellamy). I was looking forward to seeing him again and the last time I saw him was a while back, I was leaving the beach just as he was getting there. He said that he would catch me next time but there was to be, no more next times. He died in his sleep this week and I can't help but wonder what Cape Cod history, life lessons, stories or jokes he would have shared with me that day. "Catch ya later, Conrad." you will be missed. I just joined a cool site called OURMEDIA.org everyone in my huge reader base should check it out. As I said before, sometimes I use PERFORMANCING blog editor and it makes putting what you wrote on one blog, share it with all your other blogs very easy. Still can't sleep it's 2:27am and I plan
on going outside at 5am so I'll have enough time to walk up to Nauset
Regional High School with Dylan (my sister's dog) so I'll be able to
see the ISS (International Space Station) pass by. It's due to be in
the Northern skies around 5:50am and visible for about 2 or 3 minutes,
if all goes well. I have the exact times and compass points, etc.
written down. Some guy up at the donut shop said it can be seen with
just your eyes but binoculars make it so clear you can make out the
shape of it! That's cool! This is my first post and I am really glad
that I ran into this site. I plan on getting a podcast together,soon.

Blogger Help Shows How to get Photo URL

Cape Cod Media King Lives! I was trying to get my photo on my profile but kept messing it up. Help section was great, 1st go to "edit profile" & it says add URL for photo. I was like what f...... URL I looked everywhere. Then I thought HELP was what I need. The help section said go to Blogger home, sign in, go to "dash board" click new post and then click the add photo button, find photo add it to new post, click "edit HTML" tab, when it goes from "compose" to "edit HTML" , you will see the source code, that weird language, that looks like this [=]. This is where you have to be a little careful, look in the code for your photo it will start with http.//bla bla bla bla.jpg or something like that. Then just copy and paste it on line where it says add photo URL on the edit profile. At bottom of the page it says "save changes" or something like that, click that button, then it says to republish blog so that you can see the changes made. Next time you look at your complete profile "WHA LA" new photo is sitting pretty! I hope I did not make any mistakes tell you but I think it explains adding a photo to your profile pretty good. When most tutorials explain stuff, they leave alot of steps out because they assume everybody knows the basic stuff. GOOD NIGHT & GOOD LUCK.

Slow Dial Up Connections Can Be Useful!!! 9/ 17/ 2006

I just thought of something good about having a slow dial up connection. As I sit here waiting for itunes 7 to download I thought why not use the time to write something for my page. It is easy to do because the Firefox extension called Performancing that I have, stays as a tiny litte icon in my status bar till it pops up & you can cover as much or as little of the web page you were viewing w/ this cool podcast editing program. Write as little or as much as you want then either publish or save as a draft, so far it works great. It does lots of other cool stuff too. Well, when I was waking my sister's dog last night at sunset. Listening to my favorite podcast "Alaska Podshow" by Scott Slone, as he was introducing some of the indie music they play. He was reflecting on the recent tragic death of "Croc Hunter" Steve Erwin. and reminded me "all of us", to take the time to look around at where we are, at that very moment. I looked up as I walked down my street at the sunset through the trees & Scott reminded us, that moment we were experiencing will soon be gone, never to be repeated ever again. It really hit me & made me think about life & how I live it. None of those people on Sept. 11th, realized that was the LAST time they kissed spouses goodbye, fed pets, put on shoes & walked out the door, never to do those things again. I hope they took a moment to look at that beautiful clear blue sky that day because I bet Steve Erwin did.

" Feral cats have taken over my mind" is quite a bold statement but a cat w/ her babies living in my back yard and in need of lots of food & a real home. Waiting to get old enough to breed & enjoy my company & food, is too much. So, my friend Michele , who buys most of the food , by the way. Found a "no-kill" shelter for animals & we are hoping to be able to catch them, W/O too much difficulty. So, PLEASE if you love pets get them fixed & save alot of suffering! I call her "Pretty Princess".

Thursday Night Really Beat.....But got Internet Security 2006

Installed my new Norton Internet Security 2006, I know,I know, some people don't like it but I got a Dell PC & it had the 2005 version w/ 18 month udate subscription & it worked out , ok. Staples had a bundle w/ Save & Restore included for almost free after all the rebates (I HATE REBATES) getting $$ is cool , sending forms out & waiting stinks! One thing people overlook (me too) is backing up files. Well no more, I got a Dynex hard drive enclosure for cheap on Ebay that can take up to a 500GB drive, I can get used ones from someone that upgraded or maybe even a new one on sale. That Save & Restore will save tons of time once I get it configured. Tried Mozy online & I must say I works pretty good but you run out of free storage fast , then you must buy more. I thought at home would be better. One thing I love is Google's extension , Stumble Upon. It is a great idea, when I am stressed out or something, you just "stumble" on some web site you might never search for but wish you had, very interesting & entertaining. Also, met someone from China on Blogger but had some trouble reading his stuff, if anyone knows please tell me but it appears to have been censored w/ lines of writing replaced with, this; ????????????. ????????????, etc. Is that just how it looks before it is translated? Hope someone knows, I don't think I should ask my Chinese friend, in case it gets him in trouble or something. It was really cool talking to someone on otherside of world!!! Anyway I will keep this brief and will put up some more photos. I must try to get this site in order & looking good so anyone that reads it won't think (know) I am lazy. Next post, podcasts, podcasts and more podcasts!

Just playing around w/ this editor. I want to see how Performancing interacts with this one. In Cape Cod Times Sunday Edition, it made my day when I found a USB headphone & mic on sale for half what my sister paid for one. Trying to produce a podcast. Man, do I love podcasting. Load up the Mp3 player and take the dog for a walk & listen to indie music, tech & gadget reviews, take beginning Spanish lessons, political speeches, how to buy old books and not get ripped off, etc.,etc.,... etc. What a wonderful world on technology.

Sunday Morning on Cape Cod

It was cloudy this morning but has become breezy and beautiful! Called Nickerson State Park to find out what areas of the park will be open this fall. What a nice place, it is only a few miles from my house. They allow people to bring pets, have fires and there is a great lake for swimming, fishing & canoeing, what more could ask for!
